Curative properties of the Losinj climate have been well-known since the late nineteenth century, when the health tourism on the island was born. In 1882, Doctor Conrad Clar (1844-1904), an established Austrian balneologist and natural therapist, in association with Doctor Leopold Schroter, ORL specialist and university professor from Vienna, discovered curative properties and the Losinj climate and declared the towns of Mali Losinj and Veli Losinj national sanatoriums.
At first, Losinj was known for its winter tourism. It became the gathering spot for Vienna's aristocracy, and many sanatoriums and spas were built in that period, as well as hotels and villas right on the coast. Today, summer-time tourism is far more popular and important than the winter one, but the health-conscientious tourism is led by the Veli Losinj Sanatorium that focuses on treatment of pulmonary and skin diseases.
Dolphin Island
If you stay with us during winter or early spring, with a little luck you will be able to see dolphins playing in the sea in front of the house! Namely, Losinj has the Blue World Institute focused on research and protection of endangered Adriatic species, while the Adriatic Project Dolphin has been established in the early 21st century, with goal to study ecology, population, genetics, acoustics and habitats of the good dolphins in the Adriatic Sea. If you wish to, you can also adopt a dolphin, follow the Dolphin Path, or register for an organised boat ride for dolphin watching.
Natural healing factors of Losinj are: mild climate, 2,580 sunny hours per year on average, sea water that is consistently tested and is pristine, marine aerosol, 265 types of algae in the Losinj waters, plant life, clean air, as well as olive tree, pine tree and blueberry bush pollen, as well as numerous aromatic plans and sea air, which are beneficial to the overall health and they reduce stress and the issues related to the pulmonary and skin diseases. It is believed that these healing properties come from the combination of the sea air mixed with the aromatic oils of algae and plans growing on the shore.
Losinj has subtropical vegetation, with mild sea currents coming from the southern Mediterranean, which helps keep the waters pristine and keeps the winter temperatures at 12 degrees Celsius on average, and summer temperatures at 28 degrees Celsius. Long-term tradition of treating pulmonary diseases with natural remedies has made Losinj into a top destination, where visitors can relax from everyday stress of modern living.
